    Entering the US

What to expect when you arrive in the US, including immigration, customs, and clearing the border on a J-1 visa.

    Last updated April 2, 2026

When can I enter the US?

You may not arrive in the United States more than 30 days before the program start date shown on your DS-2019. If you arrive earlier than this, you could be denied entry. Plan your travel so that you arrive in time for the start of your camp contract.

    What happens at immigration?

When you arrive in the US, you will go through two checkpoints: immigration and customs.

    At immigration, an officer will:

    • Ask to see your passport with your J-1 visa

    • Request your DS-2019 form

    • Take your fingerprints and photo

    • Ask questions about your trip

Lines can sometimes be long depending on how many flights have recently arrived, but you will get through.

What questions will the immigration officer ask?

Immigration officers typically ask simple questions. Be ready to answer:

    • The name and location of your camp

    • Your role at camp (counselor or support staff)

    • How long you will be staying in the US

    • Your plans for returning home after camp or your travel period

Answer clearly and honestly. There is no need to volunteer extra information unless asked.

What documents do I need to show?

Keep these items easily accessible in your carry-on luggage:

    • Your passport with J-1 visa

    • DS-2019 form

    • SEVIS receipt

    • Camp contract or placement information

    • Camp address and contact information

    • Proof of your return flight

    • Camp Leaders emergency contact information

What is the I-94 and why does it matter?

Your I-94 record is issued when you are granted entry into the United States. It serves as your official registration with the US government and supplements the visa inside your passport, supporting your legal admittance into the country to start your program. You can locate and print your I-94 from the official US Customs and Border Protection website after entry.

    How does customs work?

After collecting your luggage, you will pass through customs. Officers may ask about the items you are bringing into the country and may request to inspect your luggage. As long as you have followed airline packing guidelines and are not bringing prohibited items, this is usually quick and smooth.

What if I am selected for additional screening?

The vast majority of participants are granted entry after just 1 or 2 questions, but occasionally people may be selected at random for further screening. If this happens:

    • Stay calm and polite

    • Be aware that your phone may be searched

    • Ask for clarification if you do not understand something

    • Remember that immigration officers are just doing their job

    • You can provide contact information for your camp, visa sponsor, and Camp Leaders if they have questions

If you are selected for additional screening and have the ability to, send a WhatsApp message to your camp contact letting them know.

What about connecting flights within the US?

If your journey includes a connecting flight within the US, you must complete immigration and customs at your first point of entry. This means:

    1. Go through immigration and customs at your first US airport

    2. Collect your checked luggage

    3. Re-check your luggage for your connecting flight

    4. Go through security again

    5. Find your connecting gate and board your next flight

What if my luggage is lost or damaged?

If your luggage is lost or damaged:

    1. Go to the airline's baggage service desk before leaving the airport

    2. Fill out a lost or damaged baggage report and keep your copy

    3. Note the reference number they give you and keep all baggage receipts

    4. Contact your insurance provider to start a claim if your policy includes luggage coverage

Filing a claim at the airport is essential. If you do not report the problem while you are there, you will not be reimbursed for any loss.

Can I leave and re-enter the US during my program?

If you need to leave the United States and return during your camp program, contact your visa sponsor before you travel. Your DS-2019 form will need to be authorized for travel by your sponsor. You can only re-enter during your program dates and only if your J-1 visa has an "M" (multiple entry) stamped under Entries.
