What should I pack?
Your camp may provide you with a specific packing list. Make sure to pack everything they suggest. Beyond that, focus on comfortable, practical clothing suitable for outdoor activities and a range of weather.
Pack one extra set of clothes and any important medication in your hand luggage, in case your checked bag is delayed. If you take regular medication, bring enough to last your entire time in the US. Keep medications in their original packaging and carry a copy of your prescription or a letter from your doctor, as this can help if you are questioned at customs.
Always check with your airline for the correct dimensions and weight allowances for both checked and hand luggage.
What should I not bring?
Avoid packing anything that could cause issues at security or customs. Your camp may also have rules about what you can and cannot keep in your accommodation, particularly items that are not appropriate in an environment with children. Your camp will let you know about any specific restrictions.
How should I label my luggage?
Clearly label your suitcase inside and out with your name and your camp's address. If you can, add something to help you identify your luggage from a distance, like a colorful strap or belt. This makes it much easier to spot at baggage claim.
What about liquids in hand luggage?
Liquids in hand luggage must follow airline restrictions. Each container must hold no more than 100ml, and all containers must fit in a transparent, resealable bag (typically around 20cm x 20cm). This includes drinks, gels, sprays, pastes, and semi-liquid food.
If possible, pack liquids in your checked bag instead. Check your airline's website for the latest rules, as these can vary.
What is a TSA lock?
A TSA lock is a type of padlock approved by the US Transportation Security Administration. Security staff at airports have a specific key that can open TSA locks, which means they can inspect your luggage without breaking the lock. If you want to secure your checked luggage, a TSA lock is the best option.
Should I pack gifts for camp?
Many participants bring small gifts or items from their home country to share with campers and staff. This is not required, but it is a nice touch and fits well with the cultural exchange spirit of the program. Items that represent your country or culture (snacks, flags, small souvenirs) tend to go down well.
What should I wear on the flight?
Wear something very comfortable and warm, as you may be exposed to air conditioning for an extended time. Avoid contact lenses if possible, as they can dry out and irritate your eyes during long flights.
