    Your DS-2019

What the DS-2019 form is, why it matters, and how to get yours issued through your Camp Leaders visa sponsor.

    Last updated March 25, 2026

    What is the DS-2019?

The DS-2019, officially called the "Certificate of Eligibility for Exchange Visitor (J-1) Status," is the most important document in your visa process. It is issued by your visa sponsor and allows you to apply for a J-1 visa at a US Embassy or Consulate.

Without your DS-2019, you cannot enter the United States on a J-1 visa.

    When will I receive it?

Camp Leaders will order your DS-2019 once you have completed the required steps in your profile. The timing depends on how quickly you complete everything, so finishing your profile promptly helps avoid delays.

How you receive your DS-2019 depends on your visa sponsor:

    • CHI participants will find their DS-2019 in the visa section of the Camp Leaders profile once it is released

    • CENET, CIEE, or Greenheart participants will receive their DS-2019 by email or through the sponsor's portal. Look for an email with download instructions

What do the dates on my DS-2019 mean?

The dates printed on your DS-2019 represent the first and last day of your employment at camp. They do not include your 30-day travel period after camp. The grace period begins the day after the end date shown on your DS-2019.

What if there is an error on my DS-2019?

If you notice any errors on your DS-2019 (incorrect name, dates, or other details), contact Camp Leaders immediately. Errors need to be corrected before your visa appointment, as the information on your DS-2019 must match your passport and other documents.

What if I lose my DS-2019?

If you lose your DS-2019 before leaving for camp, contact Camp Leaders immediately. A reprint may be possible, though there may be a charge. Keep your DS-2019 safe and always store it with your passport.

It is a good idea to keep a photo of your DS-2019 on your phone and a copy in your email, in case of emergency.

What if I receive a reprint after my embassy appointment?

If you receive a reprinted DS-2019 after your embassy appointment, you must bring both the reprint and the original DS-2019 that was signed by the consulate with you to the United States. Do not leave either document behind.

Is there any way to speed up my visa processing?

There is no way to speed up visa processing once your documents have been submitted. The best approach is to give yourself as much time as possible by uploading your documents quickly and booking your visa appointment as soon as you receive your SEVIS information.

Why does the DS-2019 have "2019" in its name?

The number "2019" is simply part of the form's official name. It does not refer to the calendar year. The form keeps the same name regardless of when it is issued.
