What is a Social Security Number?
A Social Security Number (SSN) is a US government-issued identification number that you need in order to get paid for your work at camp. Every Camp Leaders participant needs to apply for one after arriving in the US.
How do I apply for one?
Your camp will help you apply for a Social Security Number. This is usually done within the first 5 to 10 days of arriving at camp. In most cases, camp will arrange transportation to the nearest Social Security office.
What documents do I need?
To apply for a Social Security Number, you will need your passport with your J-1 visa, your DS-2019 form, your camp contract, your I-94 (your electronic arrival/departure record), and your SEVIS receipt.
What is an I-94 and where do I get it?
The I-94 is your US electronic arrival and departure record. It is generated automatically by US immigration when you enter the country. You can print it from the I-94 website (https://i94.cbp.dhs.gov/) after you arrive at camp.
What if camp has not taken me to apply after 2 weeks?
If your camp has not arranged for you to apply for your Social Security Number within 2 weeks of arriving, email the Camp Leaders US office. They will follow up and make sure it gets sorted.
