What is cultural exchange and why does it matter?
The purpose of the Camp Leaders program and BridgeUSA is cultural exchange. This is more than sightseeing in America. It is about learning American culture while sharing your own. The cultural exchange element is a requirement of your J-1 visa.
How can I share my culture at camp?
You are a representative of your home country at camp. Talk about your country and traditions, teach campers a few words in your language, share your country's food or music, and participate in international days or cultural events.
What are international days?
Many camps hold international days where staff can showcase their home countries. This might include sharing food, displaying your country's flag, talking about your history and traditions, or leading an activity related to your culture.
Should I engage in political activity in the US?
Camp Leaders strongly discourages you from engaging in any political activity, protests, or posting political statements or opinions on your social media during your time in the United States. The BridgeUSA program is widely supported across all political parties in the United States and is a meaningful cultural exchange experience for both Americans and participants coming from abroad. Your visa sponsor, the American Camp Association, and Camp Leaders are here to support you throughout your program.
Cultural differences are part of what makes camp so special. Take time to observe, listen, and embrace the opportunity to share your own culture while learning from others.
