    Camp Leaders interview

How to prepare for your Camp Leaders interview, what to expect, and tips for making a great impression.

    Last updated March 25, 2026

Why do I need to interview?

The interview is a requirement of the US Department of State and a key part of the Camp Leaders screening process. Because the program involves working with children in the US on a J-1 visa, this interview helps confirm your eligibility, get to know you, and understand your skills and interests so we can match you with the right camp.

It is also a great chance for you to meet the Camp Leaders team, ask questions, and get guidance on your application.

    What happens in the interview?

Your interview will be a one-on-one conversation with a friendly Camp Leaders team member who has been to camp themselves. It will last around 30 minutes, though give yourself about 15 minutes extra in case it runs over.

The interview is not a test. It is a conversation to learn about you, your motivations, and what kind of camp experience you are looking for.

How do I book my interview?

You can book your interview through the Camp Leaders platform. Once your application is ready for the interview stage, you will see available time slots to choose from. Book a time that works for you and make sure you are somewhere quiet with a reliable internet connection if the interview is online.

What should I do before my interview?

Make sure you have completed the sensitive data section of your application before your interview, as this is required. Fill out as much of your application as possible too, since your interviewer will ask questions based on what you have written in your profile.

    How should I prepare?

    • Think about why you want to go to camp and what you hope to get from the experience

    • Be ready to talk about any skills, hobbies, or experience you have, even informal ones

    • If you have experience working with children or young people, think of a few examples

    • Review your own profile before the interview, especially your Skills and All About Me sections, as your interviewer will use these to guide their questions

    • Prepare a couple of questions you would like to ask about the program

    • Make sure you are in a quiet space with good lighting if the interview is over video call

    • Turn off distractions like your phone or TV so you can be fully present during the conversation

    Where will my interview be?

Interviews take place either in person or over a video call, depending on which country you are applying from. Your Camp Leaders profile will confirm the format when you book.

    What are you looking for?

We are looking for people who are enthusiastic, open-minded, and genuinely interested in the camp experience. You do not need to have all the answers or a perfect CV. What matters is your attitude, your willingness to get involved, and your readiness to be part of a team.

What if I am not accepted after the interview?

If you are not accepted into the program, any fees you have paid will be refunded. The team will take the time to give you clear feedback and may be able to recommend a more suitable program for you.
